The Veil and Pillars

A veil of blue, purple, and crimson yarn and fine linen is made, with cherubim woven into it.

H14e made the veil of blue, purple, and crimson yarn and fine linen, with cherubim woven into it.

Two tall pillars are set before the temple, crowned with capitals, chainwork, and pomegranates. Solomon places them on the south and north and gives them the names Jachin and Boaz.

15In front of the temple he made two pillars, which together were thirty-five cubits high, each with a capital on top measuring five cubits. 16He made interwoven chains and put them on top of the pillars. He made a hundred pomegranates and fastened them into the chainwork. 17Then he set up the pillars in front of the temple, one on the south and one on the north. The pillar on the south he named Jachin, and the pillar on the north he named Boaz.

Section summaryThe chapter finishes with the veil before the inner room and the two pillars before the temple. Their colored fabric, chainwork, pomegranates, and names give the completed entrance a formal and memorable shape.
Role in the chapterThis closing section completes the temple’s visible thresholds. After the inner sanctuary and its cherubim, it returns to the boundary and frontage that mark approach to the house.
