Jehu Kills the Princes of Judah
Jehu kills Judah’s rulers and Ahaziah’s relatives while judging Ahab’s house, then finds and kills Ahaziah himself. Even so, Ahaziah is buried because of Jehoshaphat’s faithful memory.
S8o while Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab, he found the rulers of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s brothers who were serving Ahaziah, and he killed them. 9Then Jehu looked for Ahaziah, and Jehu’s soldiers captured him while he was hiding in Samaria. So Ahaziah was brought to Jehu and put to death. They buried him, for they said, “He is the grandson of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.”
Section summaryAs Jehu carries out judgment on Ahab’s house, the destruction reaches Judah’s royal circle as well. Ahaziah and the rulers around him fall, though his burial still recalls the memory of Jehoshaphat.
Role in the chapterThis section completes Ahaziah’s downfall and shows how deeply Judah has been caught in Ahab’s judgment. It also preserves a brief note of honor amid the wreckage by remembering his grandfather.
