Elijah’s Letter to Jehoram

A letter from Elijah accuses Jehoram of walking in Israel’s ways, leading Judah into prostitution, and killing brothers better than himself. It announces a severe blow against his house and an agonizing disease that will consume him over time.

T12hen a letter came to Jehoram from Elijah the prophet, which stated: 13‘You have not walked in the ways of your father Jehoshaphat or of Asa king of Judah, but you have walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and have caused Judah and the people of Jerusalem to prostitute themselves, just as the house of Ahab prostituted itself. You have also killed your brothers, your father’s family, who were better than you. 14So behold, the LORD is about to strike your people, your sons, your wives, and all your possessions with a serious blow. 15And day after day you yourself will suffer from a severe illness, a disease of your bowels, until it causes your bowels to come out.’”

Section summaryElijah’s letter gathers Jehoram’s sins into a clear indictment: he has rejected Judah’s faithful pattern, copied Ahab’s house, corrupted the people, and murdered his brothers. The judgment announced is fittingly total, reaching his house, his possessions, and his own body.
Role in the chapterThis section gives divine interpretation before the final blows fall. It turns the chapter from visible decline to explicit prophetic sentence, so the coming disasters are heard as judgment rather than misfortune.
