The Death and Burial of Asa

After noting that Asa's full acts are written elsewhere, the account turns to his severe foot disease. Even in illness he does not seek the LORD, but only physicians.

N11ow the acts of Asa, from beginning to end, are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. 12In the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became diseased in his feet, and his disease became increasingly severe. Yet even in his illness he did not seek the LORD, but only the physicians.

Asa dies in the forty-first year of his reign and is buried in the tomb he prepared in the City of David. He receives an elaborate burial with spices and great honor.

13So in the forty-first year of his reign, Asa died and rested with his fathers. 14And he was buried in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a bier that was full of spices and various blended perfumes; then they made a great fire in his honor.

Section summaryThe chapter closes Asa's story with a brief record of his illness, death, and burial. Even here the note of failure remains: his disease worsens, and he seeks physicians but not the LORD, though he is buried with royal honor in Jerusalem.
Role in the chapterThis final section seals the verdict on Asa's reign. It holds together public honor and spiritual decline, ending the story without softening the warning.
