Timothy’s Encouraging Report

Timothy has just returned with good news about the Thessalonians' faith and love and their ongoing affection for Paul and his companions. That report has brought comfort in distress, and Paul says that if they stand firm in the Lord, it gives him new life.

B6ut just now, Timothy has returned from his visit with the good news about your faith, your love, and the fond memories you have preserved, longing to see us just as we long to see you. 7For this reason, brothers, in all our distress and persecution, we have been reassured about you, because of your faith. 8For now we can go on living, as long as you are standing firm in the Lord.

Paul asks how he can adequately thank God for the joy he has because of them, and he says that night and day he prays earnestly to see them face to face and supply what is lacking in their faith.

9How can we adequately thank God for you in return for our great joy over you in His presence? 10Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith.

Paul prays that God the Father and the Lord Jesus would direct the way for reunion, that the Lord would cause the Thessalonians to increase and overflow in love, and that their hearts would be established blameless in holiness at the coming of the Lord Jesus with all his saints.

11Now may our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you. 12And may the Lord cause you to increase and overflow with love for one another and for everyone else, just as our love for you overflows, 13so that He may establish your hearts in blamelessness and holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints. Amen.

Section summaryTimothy's return has brought Paul good news about the Thessalonians' faith, love, and warm remembrance, and that report has brought fresh comfort in the middle of Paul's own distress. Their standing firm in the Lord has become a source of life and joy for him, and he turns at once to thankful prayer that he may see them again, supply what is lacking in their faith, and see the Lord establish them in overflowing love and holiness for the coming of Jesus.
Role in the chapterThis closing section turns anxiety into encouragement and then into prayer. It shows pastoral joy ripening into a deeper desire for the church's maturity, love, and holiness.
