Paul’s Longing to Visit

Paul says that although he and his companions were torn away from the Thessalonians for a time in body and not in heart, they longed all the more to see them again face to face. Though Satan hindered repeated attempts to return, Paul declares that the Thessalonians themselves are his hope, joy, crown, glory, and delight before the Lord Jesus at his coming.

B17rothers, although we were torn away from you for a short time (in person, not in heart), our desire to see you face to face was even more intense. 18For we wanted to come to you — indeed I, Paul, tried again and again — but Satan obstructed us. 19After all, who is our hope, our joy, our crown of boasting, if it is not you yourselves in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming? 20You are indeed our glory and our joy.

Section summaryPaul says that though he and his companions were torn away from the Thessalonians in person, they were not separated in heart, and they longed intensely to see them again face to face. Repeated efforts were hindered, yet Paul makes clear that this church itself is his hope, joy, and crown before the Lord Jesus at his coming.
Role in the chapterThis closing section turns from the past integrity of Paul's ministry to the present ache of separation. It shows that apostolic longing is shaped by both deep affection and eschatological hope.
