1 Peter 5:10-14·~1 min

Benediction and Farewell

Peter promises that after a little while of suffering, the God of all grace will Himself act to restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish His people in the eternal glory to which He has called them in Christ. He then offers doxology, commends Silvanus as the faithful brother through whom he has written, and explains the letter's purpose: to encourage and testify that this is the true grace of God in which they must stand. Greetings from Babylon and from Mark extend the bonds of shared election, and the final commands for affectionate greeting and peace seal the letter in pastoral warmth. The paragraph closes 1 Peter by turning grace from doctrine into a place in which the church must stand.

A10nd after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore you, secure you, strengthen you, and establish you. 11To Him be the power forever and ever. Amen. 12Through Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. 13The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, as does my son Mark. 14Greet one another with a kiss of love.

Section summaryPeter concludes with one of the letter's richest promises. Suffering lasts only a little while, but the God of all grace will personally restore, strengthen, secure, and establish His people for the eternal glory to which He has called them in Christ. Peter then gives the letter its practical close: he writes through Silvanus to encourage and testify to the true grace of God, sends greetings from Babylon and from Mark, and exhorts the readers to stand firm. The final note is one of communal affection and peace among all who are in Christ.
Role in the chapterThis section ends the letter by blessing suffering believers with God's sure restoration and by reinforcing their call to stand firm in true grace.
