Paul’s Message by the Spirit’s Power

Paul says that when he came to Corinth he did not proclaim God's testimony with eloquence or impressive wisdom, because he had resolved to know only Jesus Christ and him crucified among them. He came in weakness and fear, and his preaching depended not on persuasive technique but on the Spirit's power, so that their faith would rest on God rather than on human wisdom.

W1hen I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 3I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. 4My message and my preaching were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5so that your faith would not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.

Section summaryPaul recalls his arrival in Corinth as marked by weakness, fear, and a deliberate refusal to impress them with eloquence. His purpose was that their faith would be anchored not in the force of his words but in the Spirit's power and in the crucified Christ alone.
Role in the chapterThis section ties Paul's ministry style directly to the cross he preaches. It explains why he would rather seem unimpressive than let Corinth build faith on the wrong foundation.
