The Prayer of Jabez
Jabez is marked as more honorable than his brothers, his name carrying his mother’s memory of pain. He calls on the God of Israel for blessing, enlarged territory, protection, and freedom from harm, and God grants his request.
N9ow Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 10And Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only You would bless me and enlarge my territory! May Your hand be with me and keep me from harm, so that I will be free from pain.”
Section summaryIn the middle of the genealogy, Jabez briefly steps forward as a single life in focus rather than a name in a list. His painful naming gives way to a direct prayer for blessing, enlargement, protection, and relief, and God grants what he asks.
Role in the chapterThis section interrupts the cadence of descent lines with a remembered moment of character and prayer. It gives the genealogy a human center, showing one Judahite life described not only by ancestry but by appeal to God.
