Twenty-Four Divisions of Priests
Aaron's sons are named, the priesthood is narrowed to Eleazar and Ithamar after Nadab and Abihu die childless, and David organizes their descendants into service divisions. The arrangement is recorded before the king, priests, and family heads.
T1hese were the divisions of the descendants of Aaron. The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 2But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did, and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests. 3With the help of Eleazar’s descendant Zadok and Ithamar’s descendant Ahimelech, David divided them according to the offices of their service. 4Since more leaders were found among Eleazar’s descendants than those of Ithamar, they were divided accordingly. There were sixteen heads of families from the descendants of Eleazar and eight from the descendants of Ithamar. 5Thus they were divided by lot, for there were officers of the sanctuary and officers of God among both Eleazar’s and Ithamar’s descendants. 6The scribe, Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officers: Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of families of the priests and the Levites — one family being taken from Eleazar, and then one from Ithamar.
Verse 1The chapter opens by naming the priestly divisions as the descendants of Aaron and listing Aaron's four sons: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
This verse identifies the family line from which the priestly order will be drawn.
Verse 2Because Nadab and Abihu die before Aaron and leave no sons, the priesthood continues through Eleazar and Ithamar alone.
This verse narrows the active priestly line to the two surviving branches.
Verse 3David, together with Zadok from Eleazar's line and Ahimelech from Ithamar's, divides the priests according to the offices of their service.
This verse introduces the leaders and the organizing act behind the divisions.
Verse 4More family leaders are found among Eleazar's descendants than among Ithamar's, so the divisions are set at sixteen from Eleazar and eight from Ithamar.
This verse explains the numerical shape of the priestly arrangement.
Verse 5The divisions are assigned by lot, since both Eleazar's and Ithamar's descendants include officers of the sanctuary and officers of God.
