Jabesh-gilead’s Tribute to Saul

When Jabesh-gilead hears what the Philistines have done, its valiant men recover Saul and his sons, bury them, and fast seven days. Their action answers public shame with burial and grief.

W11hen all the people of Jabesh-gilead heard about everything the Philistines had done to Saul, 12all their men of valor set out and retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days.

Verse 11The people of Jabesh-gilead hear what the Philistines have done to Saul.

It prepares the response of loyalty that follows.

Verse 12Their valiant men retrieve the bodies of Saul and his sons, bury their bones at Jabesh, and fast for seven days.

It gives Saul and his sons an honorable burial and mourning.

The chronicler explains Saul’s death as the result of unfaithfulness: he does not keep the LORD’s word, seeks a medium, and does not inquire of the LORD. Therefore the kingdom is taken from him and given to David.

13So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance, 14and he failed to inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

Verse 13Saul dies for his unfaithfulness to the LORD, because he does not keep the LORD’s word and even seeks guidance from a medium.

It begins the chapter’s explicit judgment on Saul’s reign.

Verse 14He does not inquire of the LORD, so the LORD puts him to death and gives the kingdom to David son of Jesse.

It concludes the judgment and names the transfer of the kingdom.
