Chapter 3

The Vision of Joshua the High Priest

Zechariah 3 presents a courtroom-like vision centered on Joshua the high priest. Joshua stands before the angel of the LORD in filthy garments while Satan stands ready to accuse him. The accusation is not answered by denying Joshua's uncleanness, but by the LORD's sovereign rebuke of Satan and His choice of Jerusalem. Joshua is then stripped of his filthy garments, clothed in clean attire, and given a clean turban, dramatizing the removal of guilt and the restoration of priestly fitness. After this cleansing, Joshua receives a solemn charge: if he walks in the LORD's ways and keeps His instructions, he will govern God's house and have access among the heavenly attendants. The vision then opens outward into promise. Joshua and his companions are said to be a sign, because the LORD will bring forth His servant, the Branch. A symbolic stone is set before Joshua, and the LORD promises to remove the iniquity of the land in a single day. The chapter closes with a picture of peace and neighborly security under the vine and fig tree. Together the vision joins priestly cleansing, covenant obedience, messianic expectation, and national restoration.

Within Zechariah's opening night visions, this chapter advances the restoration theme by moving from the city's future in chapter 2 to the cleansing of its priesthood in chapter 3. Jerusalem cannot simply be repopulated and protected; its worship and mediation must also be purified. Joshua therefore stands not merely as an individual but as a representative figure for the restored community and its access to God. The chapter is also one of the book's major messianic turning points, introducing the Branch and linking present priestly renewal with future divine action that will decisively remove the land's iniquity. In the wider flow of Zechariah, it binds together temple restoration, covenant holiness, and future hope, showing that God's return to Zion includes both forgiveness and renewed leadership under His own promise.

The Vision of Joshua the High Priest

T1hen the angel showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, with Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. 2And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan! Indeed, the LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebukes you! Is not this man a firebrand snatched from the fire?”

3Now Joshua was dressed in filthy garments as he stood before the angel. 4So the angel said to those standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes!” 5Then I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So a clean turban was placed on his head, and they clothed him, as the angel of the LORD stood by.

6Then the angel of the LORD gave this charge to Joshua: 7“This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘If you walk in My ways and keep My instructions, then you will govern My house and will also have charge of My courts; and I will give you a place among these who are standing here.

8Hear now, O high priest Joshua, you and your companions seated before you, who are indeed a sign. For behold, I am going to bring My servant, the Branch. 9See the stone I have set before Joshua; on that one stone are seven eyes. Behold, I will engrave on it an inscription, declares the LORD of Hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. 10On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, you will each invite your neighbor to sit under your own vine and fig tree.’”
