Book 22 · Wisdom
Song of Songs
Song of Songs celebrates the joy, desire, beauty, and exclusivity of covenant love through poetic dialogue between lovers and the chorus around them. Its imagery of longing, presence, delight, and mutual praise honors embodied affection as a gift rather than a distraction, presenting love as powerful, vulnerable, and worthy of faithful keeping.
Within Scripture, Song of Songs gives wisdom literature a lyrical register, showing that holiness is not opposed to rightly ordered delight. It can be read first as a celebration of marital love and also as a text that has long nourished reflection on the devoted, covenantal love between God and his people, because it treats love as precious, jealous, and enduring.
