Chapter 5

The Lamb Takes the Scroll and The Lamb Exalted

Revelation 5 continues the throne-room vision by introducing the sealed scroll in the right hand of the One seated on the throne and by revealing the Lamb as the only One worthy to take and open it. John first sees a mighty angel asking who is worthy to open the scroll, and the silence of all creation drives him to weep because no one appears able to unfold God's purposes. An elder then announces that the Lion of the tribe of Judah and Root of David has conquered. Yet when John looks, he sees not a devouring lion but a Lamb standing as though slain, alive at the center of the throne. The Lamb takes the scroll, and heaven erupts in worship. The living creatures and elders fall before Him with harps and bowls of incense, identified as the prayers of the saints, and they sing a new song celebrating His worthiness because He was slain and by His blood ransomed a people from every tribe, language, people, and nation. The worship then expands from the inner heavenly court to innumerable angels and finally to every creature in creation, all blessing the One on the throne and the Lamb together. The chapter presents the crucified and risen Lamb as the decisive center of heaven's worship and of God's unfolding plan.

This chapter is one of the theological high points of Revelation because it identifies who is worthy to execute God's redemptive and judicial purposes in history. Revelation 4 established the throne of God; Revelation 5 reveals that the Lamb who was slain is the One through whom the throne's purposes move forward. The chapter is therefore indispensable for understanding the rest of the book: the judgments that follow are not random catastrophes but events opened by the crucified, risen, and victorious Christ. It also gives a profoundly Christian answer to the question of power. The Lion conquers as the Lamb who was slain. Worthiness belongs not merely to raw sovereignty but to sacrificial obedience, redeeming blood, and triumphant resurrection life. Because of this, heaven worships the Lamb alongside the One on the throne, and the whole created order is drawn into His praise. Revelation 5 thus stands at the heart of the book's Christology, worship, and hope.

The Lamb Takes the Scroll

Open section

T1hen I saw a scroll in the right hand of the One seated on the throne. It had writing on both sides and was sealed with seven seals. 2And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or look inside it. 4And I began to weep bitterly, because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or look inside it.

5Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed to open the scroll and its seven seals.” 6Then I saw a Lamb who appeared to have been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which represent the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7And He came and took the scroll from the right hand of the One seated on the throne.

8When He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9And they sang a new song: 10You have made them to be a kingdom

T11hen I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels encircling the throne, and the living creatures and the elders. And their number was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands. 12In a loud voice they were saying:

13And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying: 14And the four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

  1. 01vv. 1-10The Lamb Takes the ScrollJohn sees the sealed scroll in God's right hand and hears the mighty question of worthiness, but no creature in heaven, earth, or under the earth can open it. John's tears show that the inability to open the scroll would mean the apparent closure of God's purposes. An elder comforts him by announcing the conquering Lion of Judah and Root of David. Yet the victorious figure appears as a Lamb standing though slain, alive in the center of the throne and marked by complete power and perfect sight. The Lamb takes the scroll, and the living creatures and elders immediately fall before Him in worship, presenting the prayers of the saints. Their new song celebrates His worthiness on the basis of His sacrificial death and the redeemed multinational people He has made into a kingdom and priests for God.
  2. 02vv. 11-14The Lamb ExaltedThe worship of the Lamb expands outward in widening circles. John hears the voices of countless angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders, and they ascribe sevenfold worth to the Lamb who was slain. Then every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, and in the sea joins the doxology, blessing both the One on the throne and the Lamb with praise, honor, glory, and power forever. The living creatures answer with Amen, and the elders fall down in worship. The whole created order is thus shown acknowledging the Lamb's exalted place within the worship of God.
