Chapter 22

The River of Life and more

Revelation 22 completes the book's vision by moving from the life of the new Jerusalem into the final testimony of Jesus and the closing exhortations of the prophecy. John is shown the river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the city, with the tree of life on either side, yielding continual fruit and leaves for the healing of the nations. The curse is gone, God's servants worship Him, see His face, bear His name, and reign forever in His light. The chapter then turns from vision to direct address: the angel affirms that the words are faithful and true, Jesus repeatedly declares that He is coming soon, and John is reminded not to worship the angel but to worship God and to keep the words of this prophecy. The book closes with open invitation and solemn warning: the Spirit and the bride call the thirsty to come and drink the water of life freely, while anyone who adds to or takes away from the prophecy faces covenantal judgment. Jesus' final promise, 'Yes, I am coming soon,' is answered by the church's cry, 'Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!' Revelation 22 therefore ends the whole Bible with restored life, unveiled communion with God, urgent hope, and a final appeal to receive and keep the testimony of Jesus.

This chapter is crucial because it gathers the central themes of the entire book into its final form. Revelation began with Christ's testimony to the churches amid tribulation; it ends with Christ's promise of imminent coming, the Spirit's invitation, and the vision of unhindered life in God's presence. The river and tree of life recall Eden, but here access is not merely restored to an individual garden; it is secured forever in the city of God under the shared throne of God and the Lamb. The repeated insistence that the words are faithful, true, near, and not to be sealed shows that Revelation is not meant to be admired from a distance but heard, kept, and obeyed in the present. The final warnings against adding to or subtracting from the prophecy protect the integrity of the revelation, while the invitation to the thirsty displays the book's evangelical openness even at its close. Most importantly, the chapter ends not with speculation but with desire: the people of God are taught to live between Jesus' promise 'I am coming soon' and the answering prayer 'Come, Lord Jesus.' Revelation 22 therefore functions as both consummation and commissioning, leaving the church with hope, holiness, and expectancy.

The River of Life

Open section

T1hen the angel showed me a river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2down the middle of the main street of the city. On either side of the river stood a tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit and yielding a fresh crop for each month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be within the city, and His servants will worship Him. 4They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. 5There will be no more night in the city, and they will have no need for the light of a lamp or of the sun. For the Lord God will shine on them, and they will reign forever and ever.

Jesus Is Coming

T6hen the angel said to me, “These words are faithful and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent His angel to show His servants what must soon take place.” 7“Behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of prophecy in this book. ” 8And I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had shown me these things. 9But he said to me, “Do not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God!”

10Then he told me, “Do not seal up the words of prophecy in this book, because the time is near. 11Let the unrighteous continue to be unrighteous, and the vile continue to be vile; let the righteous continue to practice righteousness, and the holy continue to be holy.” 12“Behold, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me, to give to each one according to what he has done. 13I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

14Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by its gates. 15But outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. 16“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the bright Morning Star.” 17The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let the one who hears say, “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come, and the one who desires the water of life drink freely.

I18 testify to everyone who hears the words of prophecy in this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and the holy city, which are described in this book. 20He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! 21The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints.

  1. 01vv. 1-5The River of LifeJohn is shown the river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the center of the city. Alongside it stands the tree of life with abundant fruit and healing leaves, signaling the complete reversal of the curse. God's servants worship Him, see His face, bear His name, live without night, and reign forever in His light. The section presents the renewed creation as the realm of unbroken life, healing, worship, and communion.
  2. 02vv. 6-17Jesus Is ComingThe angel confirms that the words of the prophecy are faithful and true and that what has been shown must soon take place. Jesus declares that He is coming soon and pronounces blessing on those who keep the words of this book. John is again corrected for trying to worship the angel and is told to worship God, while the prophecy is left unsealed because the time is near. The chapter then intensifies the call to moral seriousness and readiness: Christ is coming with reward, He is the Alpha and Omega, blessing belongs to those who wash their robes, and the Spirit and the bride together invite all who thirst to come and drink the water of life freely. The section turns the final vision into present exhortation, promise, and invitation.
  3. 03vv. 18-21Nothing May Be Added or RemovedThe final words of the book place the prophecy under solemn covenant warning. No one may add to or take away from the words of this book without incurring the judgments or losing the blessings described in it. Jesus again testifies that He is coming soon, and John answers with the church's longing prayer, 'Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!' The closing benediction invokes the grace of the Lord Jesus upon the saints. The section seals the book with reverence, hope, and grace.
