Chapter 10

The Angel and the Small Scroll

Revelation 10 presents an interlude between the sixth and seventh trumpets, centering on a mighty angel and an opened small scroll. John sees the angel descending from heaven clothed with cloud, rainbow, solar brightness, and fiery pillars, all imagery that conveys majesty, holiness, and delegated authority. The angel stands astride sea and land with the open scroll in hand and cries out with lion-like force, answered by the voices of the seven thunders. John is about to write what the thunders said, but a heavenly voice commands him to seal their words and not record them. The angel then lifts his hand and swears by the eternal Creator that there will be no more delay, but that the mystery of God will be fulfilled in the days when the seventh angel begins to sound. John is next commanded to take and eat the little scroll. It is sweet as honey in his mouth but bitter in his stomach, and he is then told that he must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings. The chapter thus combines revelation withheld, revelation internalized, and renewed prophetic commission.

This chapter is significant because it pauses the sequence of trumpet judgments in order to refocus the reader on prophetic vocation and the certainty of God's purposes. Revelation 10 does not simply add another vision of judgment; it interprets John's role within the unfolding revelation. The little scroll is open, meaning some part of God's message is being entrusted rather than concealed, yet the sealing of the seven thunders reminds the reader that not everything is disclosed. The oath of the mighty angel assures that God's mystery is moving toward fulfillment and that apparent delay will not persist forever. Just as important, the sweetness and bitterness of the scroll show that prophetic ministry is both delightful and painful. To receive God's word is to taste its goodness and also bear its burden. Revelation 10 therefore stands as a chapter about revelation, restraint, and recommissioning, preparing the reader for the renewed witness that follows.

The Angel and the Small Scroll

Open section

T1hen I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head. His face was like the sun, and his legs were like pillars of fire. 2He held in his hand a small scroll, which lay open. He placed his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land. 3Then he cried out in a loud voice like the roar of a lion. And when he cried out, the seven thunders sounded their voices. 4When the seven thunders had spoken, I was about to put it in writing. But I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and do not write it down.”

5Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land lifted up his right hand to heaven. 6And he swore by Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and everything in it, the earth and everything in it, and the sea and everything in it: “There will be no more delay! 7But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he begins to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be fulfilled, just as He proclaimed to His servants the prophets.”

8Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying, “Go, take the small scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel standing on the sea and on the land.” 9And I went to the angel and said, “Give me the small scroll.” 10So I took the small scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I had eaten it, my stomach turned bitter. 11And they told me, “You must prophesy again about many peoples and nations and tongues and kings.”
