Chapter 124

Our Help Is in the Name of the LORD

This psalm remembers how completely the people would have been destroyed if the LORD had not stood with them. It imagines the enemy's rage as flood and trap, then blesses the LORD for refusing to hand them over and closes by fixing their confidence in the name of the LORD, maker of heaven and earth.

Within the Songs of Ascents, Psalm 124 answers weakness with remembered rescue. It fits Book V by teaching the pilgrim community to narrate survival correctly: not as luck, strength, or narrow escape alone, but as deliverance granted by the LORD who preserves his people when danger is already closing over them.
