Nahum

Chapter 1

The Burden against Nineveh

Nahum 1 opens by naming the oracle as a burden against Nineveh and then unfolds a majestic description of the LORD's character. He is jealous and avenging, slow to anger but never lax in justice. His power shakes creation, dries seas, and causes mountains to quake, so that none can stand before His indignation. Yet this same God is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who take refuge in Him. From that theological foundation the chapter turns directly against Nineveh, declaring that the LORD will bring its plotting to an end, cut off its name, and break its yoke from Judah. The chapter closes by announcing good news to Zion: the wicked one will pass through no more, so Judah may keep its feasts in peace.

As the opening chapter of the book, Nahum 1 establishes the theological premise for everything that follows: Nineveh's downfall is not random geopolitical change but the outworking of the LORD's holy character. The chapter balances two truths that remain central throughout Nahum — God is terrifying toward evil and trustworthy toward those who seek refuge in Him. It also sets the book's emotional direction. What is doom for Nineveh is release for Judah. In that way, Nahum 1 serves as both divine self-revelation and covenant reassurance, preparing the reader to see the collapse of empire as an act of justice rather than mere revenge.
