Chapter 4

The Day of the LORD

Malachi 4 closes the Old Testament prophetic witness by drawing the book's concerns into a final vision of the day of the LORD. That day is presented first as judgment: it burns like a furnace, reducing the arrogant and every evildoer to stubble so thoroughly that neither root nor branch remains. Yet for those who fear the LORD's name, the same day brings not destruction but healing, joy, and vindication. The sun of righteousness rises with healing in its wings, and the faithful emerge with the freedom and delight of calves released from the stall. The closing verses then shift from final distinction to final exhortation. Israel is told to remember the law of Moses, and the promise is given that Elijah the prophet will come before the great and awesome day of the LORD. His ministry will turn hearts across generations so that the land is not struck with covenant curse. The chapter therefore ends with both warning and hope, with judgment and healing, and with the prophetic canon poised between remembered law and awaited restoration.

As the concluding chapter of Malachi and of the Twelve, this passage gathers the book's themes of divine justice, covenant fear, faithful remembrance, and coming distinction into a final compressed oracle. The day of the LORD that earlier chapters anticipated here becomes explicit: it is the moment when the cynical equations of the present age are overturned, the wicked are judged, and those who fear the LORD are publicly healed and vindicated. The chapter is also canonically significant because it binds together Moses and Elijah, law and prophetic expectation, memory and promise. In doing so, it gives the Old Testament its final orientation: the people are to remain obedient to God's revealed covenant while waiting for His promised intervention. Malachi 4 therefore serves as both conclusion and threshold, sealing the prophetic message with urgency while opening expectation toward the LORD's future work.

1For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace, when all the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble; the day is coming when I will set them ablaze,” says the LORD of Hosts. “Not a root or branch will be left to them.” 2“But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings, and you will go out and leap like calves from the stall. 3Then you will trample the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day I am preparing,” says the LORD of Hosts.

4“Remember the law of My servant Moses, the statutes and ordinances I commanded him for all Israel at Horeb. 5Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and awesome Day of the LORD. 6And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land with a curse.”
