Jonah

Chapter 2

Jonah’s Prayer

Jonah 2 records Jonah's prayer from inside the great fish. Speaking from the depth where judgment has taken him, Jonah describes being cast into the deep, surrounded by waves, seaweed, and the threat of death itself. Yet the prayer does not end in despair. Jonah remembers the LORD, and his cry rises again to God's holy temple. He contrasts the emptiness of idols with the faithfulness of the LORD, vows renewed thanksgiving and obedience, and the chapter closes with God's command to the fish to release Jonah onto dry land.

This chapter is the theological center of Jonah's descent and preservation. After the narrative action of chapter 1, Jonah 2 slows the story and lets the prophet interpret his experience in prayer. It shows that the fish is not merely a miracle of survival but the place where Jonah is brought to acknowledge that salvation belongs to the LORD alone. The chapter therefore functions as both testimony and turning point: Jonah is preserved through judgment, brought to confession, and prepared to be sent again.
