Chapter 51

Salvation for Zion and God’s Fury Removed

Isaiah 51 calls those who pursue righteousness to remember the LORD's past creative and covenant acts and to draw confidence from them as He promises comfort, justice, and everlasting salvation for Zion. The chapter then addresses Jerusalem in her affliction, portraying her as one who has drained the cup of divine wrath, but announcing that the cup will be taken from her hand and given instead to those who trampled her down.

This chapter matters because it teaches God's people to interpret present affliction through the memory of His past faithfulness and the certainty of His future salvation. Isaiah 51 binds creation, exodus, covenant promise, and the removal of wrath together, so that comfort for Zion is shown to rest not in circumstances but in the unchanging identity and power of the LORD.
