Chapter 44

The LORD Has Chosen Israel and Jerusalem to Be Restored

Isaiah 44 unfolds as a sweeping reassurance that the LORD has chosen, formed, and will restore Israel, while at the same time exposing the emptiness of idols with almost satirical force. The chapter moves from promises of Spirit-poured renewal and public belonging to the LORD, into a sustained demolition of idol-making, and then rises again into a triumphant promise of forgiveness, cosmic rejoicing, Jerusalem's rebuilding, and Cyrus's appearance as God's appointed shepherd.

This chapter matters because it binds together election, creation, redemption, and providence in a single argument. The God who chose Jeshurun is the only God, the Maker of all things, the blotted-out forgiver of transgressions, the one who overturns false divination, confirms His own servants, and names Cyrus before history unfolds; for that reason Isaiah 44 becomes one of the clearest chapters in Scripture on the folly of idolatry and the total sovereignty of the LORD over restoration.

18They do not comprehend or discern, 19And no one considers in his heart, 20He feeds on ashes.
