Chapter 3

Judgment on Jerusalem and Judah and A Warning to the Daughters of Zion

Isaiah 3 announces the removal of Jerusalem and Judah's supports, the collapse of social order, and the exposure of leadership that has misled the people into ruin. The chapter then turns to the daughters of Zion, whose cultivated pride and finery will be stripped away, leaving mourning, shame, and desolation where there had been display and confidence.

As the third chapter of Isaiah, this passage extends the Day-of-the-LORD theme by showing how divine judgment reaches both public structures and private vanity. It reinforces Isaiah's warning that when a people abandon the fear of the Lord, God may judge them not only by external enemies but by dismantling their social stability and exposing the emptiness of their pretensions.

18In that day the Lord will take away their finery: 19their pendants, bracelets, and veils; 20their headdresses, ankle chains, and sashes; 21their signet rings and nose rings; 22their festive robes, capes, cloaks, and purses; 23and their mirrors, linen garments, tiaras, and shawls.
