Isaiah

Chapter 1

Judah’s Rebellion and more

Isaiah 1 opens the book by presenting Judah and Jerusalem as covenant children who have rebelled against the LORD, rendering their worship hollow and their city corrupt. The chapter moves from accusation and devastation to an appeal for repentance and cleansing, then closes with promises of Zion's eventual restoration alongside the ruin of the unrepentant.

As the book's opening chapter, this passage introduces Isaiah's core themes in concentrated form: covenant rebellion, divine holiness, the rejection of hypocritical worship, the necessity of justice, and the hope of redemption through judgment. It functions as a theological doorway into the whole prophecy by showing that the God who wounds for sin also calls, reasons, purifies, and restores.
