Hosea

Chapter 10

Retribution for Israel’s Sin

Hosea 10 describes a nation whose outward fruitfulness has only increased its guilt. Israel has used prosperity to multiply altars and sacred pillars, its divided heart is now exposed, and its idolatrous confidence is about to collapse along with king, shrine, and high place. The chapter then widens into a fuller verdict: from Gibeah onward Israel has persisted in sin, has plowed wickedness instead of righteousness, and will therefore meet the battle and devastation its own false trust has prepared.

Within Hosea, this chapter sharpens the book's central claim that judgment is not arbitrary but proportionate to a long pattern of covenant distortion. The people have treated blessing as license, worship as self-serving invention, and political or military strength as a substitute for repentance. Hosea 10 therefore presses both accusation and appeal together, holding out the command to seek the LORD even while announcing that the harvest now gathering is the one Israel has sown for itself.
