Chapter 2

The List of Returning Exiles and Offerings by the Exiles

Ezra 2 records the first return from Babylon in careful detail, naming leaders, families, towns, temple servants, and the full size of the assembly. It also marks the limits of that restored community, noting those whose lineage cannot be confirmed. The chapter closes with offerings for the house of God and with the people settled again in their towns.

After Cyrus permits the return in Ezra 1, this chapter gives the returned community its shape. It slows the story down long enough to show that restoration means real people, ordered households, and a re-gathered worshiping people in the land.

W68hen they arrived at the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, some of the heads of the families gave freewill offerings to rebuild the house of God on its original site. 69According to their ability, they gave to the treasury for this work 61,000 darics of gold, 5,000 minas of silver, and 100 priestly garments. 70So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, along with some of the people, settled in their own towns; and the rest of the Israelites settled in their towns.
