Ecclesiastes

Chapter 12

Remember Your Creator and The Whole Duty of Man

Ecclesiastes 12 brings the book to its climax by urging the reader to remember the Creator before the frailty of old age and the final return to dust. It then closes by commending the Teacher's hard-won words as truth meant to prod and anchor the hearer, concluding that the whole duty of humanity is to fear God and keep his commandments because every hidden thing will come into judgment.

As the conclusion of Ecclesiastes, this chapter gathers the book's realism about decay, mortality, and futility into a final call for reverent remembrance and obedience. It resolves the long search under the sun not by solving every riddle but by directing the reader back to the Creator, the Shepherd, and the certainty of divine judgment.

N9ot only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught the people knowledge; he pondered, searched out, and arranged many proverbs. 10The Teacher searched to find delightful sayings and to record accurate words of truth. 11The words of the wise are like goads, and the anthologies of the masters are like firmly embedded nails driven by a single Shepherd. 12And by these, my son, be further warned: There is no end to the making of many books, and much study wearies the body.

13When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: Fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the whole duty of man. 14For God will bring every deed into judgment, along with every hidden thing, whether good or evil.
