Chapter 3

Witnesses against Israel

Amos 3 explains why Israel's unique relationship with the LORD intensifies rather than lessens its accountability. The chapter opens by reminding the people that the God who brought them up from Egypt has known them in a distinct covenant way, and therefore will punish their iniquities. A chain of rhetorical questions then shows that effects do not arise without causes: alarm, judgment, and prophetic speech all have grounds. Amos's message is not random. Because the LORD has spoken, the prophet must speak. The chapter then summons foreign observers to witness the disorders within Samaria, exposes the violence and hoarded plunder stored in its palaces, and announces that the land, altars, and luxurious houses will all be struck down.

Within Amos, this chapter deepens the logic of the book's accusation. After surrounding nations, Judah, and Israel have all been named, Amos 3 now clarifies the theological basis for Israel's coming judgment: election is not immunity, but heightened responsibility. The chapter also strengthens Amos's prophetic authority by linking his speech directly to the LORD's revealed counsel. It therefore serves as both covenant explanation and courtroom summons, moving the book from denunciation into a more explicit exposure of Israel's privilege, corruption, and inevitable reckoning.
