2 John

Chapter 1

A Greeting from the Elder and more

2 John 1 opens with a greeting that is already saturated with the letter's major themes: truth, love, fellowship, and grace from the Father and the Son. The elder then rejoices to find some of the lady's children walking in the truth and urges the community to continue in the old commandment to love one another. That love is defined not sentimentally but as walking according to God's commandments. John then turns to a serious warning: many deceivers have gone out into the world and deny Jesus Christ's coming in the flesh. Believers must watch themselves, remain in the teaching of Christ, and refuse to extend supportive hospitality to those who oppose this teaching. The letter ends with a warm personal conclusion that prefers face-to-face fellowship to mere written communication and closes with greetings from the children of the elect sister.

As the only chapter of 2 John, this passage carries the full weight of the letter's pastoral argument. It is especially significant because it shows how a church should respond when truth and love appear to pull in opposite directions. John insists that they do not actually compete. Love must be governed by truth, and truth must be expressed in love. The chapter is also important for the way it defines Christian boundaries. To remain in the teaching of Christ is to remain in fellowship with the Father and the Son, while departing from that teaching severs a person from God. Therefore hospitality, one of the church's ordinary acts of generosity, cannot be extended in a way that helps false doctrine spread. 2 John 1 thus stands as a short but decisive guide for communities seeking to remain faithful to Christ without losing either tenderness or clarity.

A Greeting from the Elder

Open section

T1he elder, 2To the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth — and not I alone, but also all who know the truth — because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever: 3Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, will be with us in truth and love.

vv. 4-6

Walking in the Truth

Open section

I4 was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father has commanded us. 5And now I urge you, dear lady — not as a new commandment to you, but one we have had from the beginning — that we love one another. 6And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the very commandment you have heard from the beginning, that you must walk in love.

vv. 7-11

Beware of Deceivers

Open section

F7or many deceivers have gone out into the world, refusing to confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8Watch yourselves, so that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be fully rewarded. 9Anyone who runs ahead without remaining in the teaching of Christ does not have God. Whoever remains in His teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10If anyone comes to you but does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your home or even greet him. 11Whoever greets such a person shares in his evil deeds.

vv. 12-13

Conclusion

Open section

I12 have many things to write to you, but I would prefer not to do so with paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come and speak with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete. 13The children of your elect sister send you greetings.

  1. 01vv. 1-3A Greeting from the ElderThe elder opens by addressing the chosen lady and her children in the truth, emphasizing that this love is shared not only by him but by all who know the truth. He explains that truth abides in believers and will remain with them forever. The greeting then invokes grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, all within the sphere of truth and love. The section establishes the letter's governing atmosphere before any exhortation or warning appears.
  2. 02vv. 4-6Walking in the TruthJohn next rejoices that some of the lady's children are walking in the truth just as the Father commanded. From that joy he moves into exhortation, urging the community to continue in the command they have had from the beginning: they must love one another. He then defines this love as walking according to God's commandments, showing that love and obedience are not rivals but mutually interpreting realities.
  3. 03vv. 7-11Beware of DeceiversJohn then warns that many deceivers have entered the world and deny that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. Such people are the deceiver and the antichrist. Because of this danger, believers must watch themselves carefully so that their labor is not lost but fully rewarded. Remaining in the teaching of Christ is essential, because only those who remain in it have both the Father and the Son. Therefore the church must not receive or endorse anyone who does not bring this teaching, since doing so would make them participants in evil.
  4. 04vv. 12-13ConclusionJohn closes with personal warmth. Though he has many more things to say, he prefers not to rely on paper and ink but hopes to come and speak face to face so that joy may be complete. The letter ends with greetings from the children of the elect sister, reinforcing the network of truth-bound fellowship that framed the opening greeting.
